Background
Cherry Woken is a Thai and Chinese restaurant in Sundsvall, and one I eat at regularly. I noticed it didn't have an official website, so anyone searching for the menu, the opening hours or the phone number had to rely on third-party listings that were often out of date.
Since it's a local place I like, I thought it would be fun to build a site for them.
The approach
The site is intentionally kept simple and mostly static. The restaurant needs a fast page that shows the essentials:
- Opening hours, including weekday lunch
- Phone number and address, so placing a takeaway order is one tap away
- The full menu, with prices, dish numbers and allergy notes
To make the menu of 60+ dishes easier to browse, I added search by dish name, number or sauce, plus filters for chicken, beef, seafood, vegetarian and spicy dishes. Visitors can also save their favourite dishes to a list and share it with friends or family, which makes it easy to remember what you ordered last time.
The dynamic parts
Only two things on the site are dynamic:
- Spice level voting. Visitors can vote on how spicy each dish is, on a scale from one to three chillies. Over time the menu builds up a crowd-sourced spice rating, which is much more useful than a single "spicy" label.
- Feedback. Visitors can report an error in the menu or anything else that could be better on the site.
Everything else is static, which keeps the site fast and cheap to host.
